Split is the largest city in Dalmatia, and the second largest city in Croatia in terms of population, and represents the economic and cultural center of Dalmatia. It is located on the central part of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, bounded by the Kaštela Bay on the west and north, and the Brač Channel on the south, and spatially covers the greater part of the Split peninsula, which connects to the mainland on its northern and eastern sides. The area of the city district Visoka got its name from the fact that it is located on an elevated area, at an altitude of 120 meters. The first written mention of Visoka, which dates back to 1219, can be found in the Split cartulary, where it is written that the land on Visoka was donated to the Chapter of St. Dujma. Due to its altitude and strategic location at the very entrance to the city, Visoka has been extremely important throughout history for the development of the city of Split.
