What you can expect from the city of Umag
Umag is a town situated on the northwest coast of Istria, the largest Croatian peninsula and one of the county’s most popular tourism destinations. Umag is well known for rich cultural and historical heritage, gorgeous beaches as well as a perfect location in proximity to some of the biggest Istrian attractions. All this makes it a perfect choice for a holiday all year round, but especially during the summer months.
The old town of Umag is characterized by picturesque streets, squares and historical buildings that date all the way back to the 13th century, and several museums and galleries, which makes it a cultural center of Northwestern Istria. The standout museum is the Umag Archeological Museum, where you can explore an extensive collection of ancient artifacts from the region, including Roman and Byzantine coins, pottery, and jewelry.
But the main reason to visit Umag for most is the coast which features countless amazing beaches, such as the Punta beach, Zambratija sand beach and Laguna Stella Maris beach. One of our favorite beaches is the Svjetionik beach, located around 7 km outside of Umag, right next to the magical Savudrija lighthouse built in 1821.
In proximity to Umag there are plenty of things to do apart from the beaches. Just outside of town you’ll find the Aquacolours water park, Baredine and Mramornica caves, as well as a big variety of options for hiking, cycling and watersports.
Umag region is also known for its ancient tradition of winemaking, so if you happen to appreciate good wines, this just might be the ideal place for you! Teran and Malvazija are the local grape varieties that are used to produce some of Europe's best wines, and they can be tasted in a large number of local vineyards and wineries.
